If you have searched for a UTV heater, you have seen two very different things: small 12-volt electric heaters that plug in like a space heater, and coolant heater kits that tie into your machine's engine. They cost different money, install differently, and - most importantly - they do not come close to putting out the same heat. Here is an honest, side-by-side look so you can buy once and ride warm.

Short version: a 12V electric heater is fine for taking the edge off your hands now and then. If you actually need to work or ride in the cold - and clear a frosted windshield - a coolant heater is in a different league.
How each type works
12V electric heaters run off your battery, turning electricity into heat through an element, just like a household space heater. They are small, simple, and heat up quickly. But they pull a lot of power to make a little heat.
Coolant heaters use the heat your engine is already making. Hot engine coolant is routed through a heater core, and a fan blows that warmth into the cab through adjustable vents - the exact same principle as the heater in your truck. It is the most heat you can get in a UTV, and it barely touches your battery because the fan is the only thing drawing power.
Head-to-head
Heat output. This is the big one. A typical 12V electric heater puts out about 300 watts - roughly 1,000 BTU per hour. Battery draw. The 12V electric heater's power is also its problem: around 25 amps, continuously, which pulls your battery down fast - especially at low RPM or when you are stopped. An Ice Crusher heater draws just 2.8 amps for its fan, because the heat comes from the engine, not the battery.
Defrost and airflow. A 12V electric heater is usually one continuous vent that just fills the cab with warm air - no heat directed to your feet, your dash, or the windshield. Most have no defrost at all unless you dash-mount them, which is difficult on a lot of modern machines. A coolant kit sends heat exactly where you need it through multiple adjustable vents, including dedicated defrost to keep the glass clear.
Warm-up time. Here is where we will be straight with you: a 12V electric heater warms up quickly, while a coolant heater needs the engine to come up to temperature first - that can take several minutes in deep cold. And because coolant heaters depend on the water pump, they put out noticeably less heat at idle than at cruising RPM. Once the machine is warm and moving, though, there is no contest.
Install. A 12V electric heater is a fairly simple job - mostly routing wires to the battery, assuming you can get behind the dash. A coolant kit takes longer (typically 4-6 hours, depending on your experience) because it ties into the engine's coolant system. There is also one case where electric genuinely wins - electric UTVs. If your machine has no engine coolant to tap, a coolant heater is not an option. For an electric UTV, a 48-volt heater is the way to go; it can put out real heat, at the expense of some range.
For every gas-engine UTV where you actually need to stay warm and see out the windshield, a coolant heater is the better buy.
